Peace is a word we often hear, but true peace is rare. The verse John 14:27 says, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." This promise of peace is unlike anything the world offers. For me, this verse marked a turning point—from simply believing in Christ to truly following Him. It changed how I live, how I face struggles, and how I find calm in the chaos of life.
The Difference Between Believing and Following
Growing up, I believed in God. I went to church every week and heard Bible stories daily. Yet, I lived my life mostly my own way. I thought belief was enough. But belief without action felt empty. It was about three years ago when I realized that believing in Christ and following Christ are not the same.
Believing is knowing Jesus exists. Following means letting Him guide your life. This shift was not sudden or perfect. It came through struggles, doubts, and daily choices. I still struggle with sin—swearing, drinking, and old habits. But now, I pray daily, ask for strength, and seek to live according to God’s word.
How Life Events Opened My Eyes
Sometimes, life events shake us awake. For me, it was a mix of personal challenges and quiet moments of reflection. I realized that no amount of good works or trying to be “good enough” could earn me heaven. Jesus died for our sins, and that relationship with Him is what matters most.
This truth changed my heart. I stopped trying to fit God’s word into my life. Instead, I started changing my life to fit God’s word. That meant letting go of old habits and embracing new ones—even when it was hard.
The Struggle and the Peace
One of the hardest parts was reading and understanding the Bible. The language can be tough, and sometimes the meaning feels distant. To help, I downloaded a Bible app and compared the NIV and KJV versions. This helped me see the words in different ways and understand better.
My cousin gave me the best advice: read the Bible as true events that really happened because they did. They are not fairy tales but true events. This mindset helped me take the stories seriously and apply them to my life.
The peace Jesus promised in John 14:27 is real. It does not come from avoiding problems or pretending everything is fine. It comes from trusting Him even when life is hard. It means not letting fear or worry control your heart.

Practical Steps That Helped Me Follow Christ
Daily Prayer: I pray about everything, big or small. It keeps me connected to God and reminds me I am not alone.
Bible Study: Using different translations and reading with the mindset that these are true stories makes the Bible come alive.
Accountability: Talking with family and friends who share my faith helps me stay on track.
Letting Go of Old Habits: Swearing stopped naturally when I focused on prayer and reading scripture. Drinking less became a choice as I sought peace.
Accepting Imperfection: I don’t have all the answers and still struggle, but I keep trying every day.
Why Relationship Matters More Than Rules
The Bible has many rules, and it can feel overwhelming. But the heart of faith is relationship, not rule-following. Jesus died to free us from trying to earn God’s love. Instead, He invites us to know Him personally.
This means we don’t live sinfully on purpose, but we also don’t have to be perfect. We grow, learn, and change as we follow Him. That journey is where peace grows.
Encouragement for Your Journey
If you feel stuck between belief and faith, know you are not alone. Many of us struggle daily. The key is to keep moving toward Jesus, even in small steps. Let His peace fill your heart, not the world’s temporary calm.
Start by reading John 14:27 slowly. Let the words sink in. Pray for peace and courage. Remember, following Christ is a journey, not a one-time event.
